When and where is the Kite Festival taking place? The LBI FLY Kite Festival this year will be held on October 11th-12th, 2024. The Main Kite Fields will be located in Ship Bottom (18th-22nd streets) from 12-5pm on Friday and 10am-4pm on Saturday. The Night Fly will be Saturday evening from 6:30-8:30pm on the 68th St Beach in Long Beach Township.
Only Friday and Saturday events? No Sunday? Correct, this year the LBI FLY has taken on a few minor changes that includes eliminating Sunday’s events. We hope expanding back to Sunday is in the future of the Kite Fest, but we know that this year’s festival on Friday and Saturday will still be an exciting time full of colorful, kite-filled skies.
Is this a free event? Yes, this event is completely free and no tickets are required. At the Night Fly on Saturday evening, we will be collecting donations, but this is not required.
Can I fly my own kite? Of course! We will have a designated Open Fly area for anyone attending the event to fly and operate their own kites South of 24th St Beach. This is to ensure that kites can be flown safely without interfering with the professional kiters and large inflatables. If you are unsure where to fly your kite when you arrive, ask someone at our welcome table between 21st and 22nd St Beach.
Will there be activities for kids? YES! We will have Kids Kite Making between 18th and 19th St Beach from 1pm-4pm on Friday and 11am-3pm on Saturday. There will also be Bubble Storms for Kids at 1pm, 2pm and 4pm at the Kite Field between 20th-21st St Beach on both Friday and Saturday.
Is this event dog-friendly? Yes, leashed dogs are allowed on Ship Bottom and Long Beach Townships beaches beginning October 1st. Please take measures to ensure your dogs do not interfere with the professional kite flyers and kites.
Where can I park for the event? Parking is free to the public and available on both Long Beach Township and Ship Bottom streets. Please make sure you are not blocking anyone’s private driveway.
Will there be public bathrooms? We will have portable restrooms at the top of a few beach entrances, on the street (19th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, 23rd, and 24th in Ship Bottom). There are also public restroom facilities at the Ship Bottom Borough Hall on 17th Street. In Long Beach Township, there will be bathrooms available on 68th Street for the Night Fly.
Where areas are handcapped accessible? In Ship Bottom: * The streets with ramp access are 20th & 21st Streets. * Beach Wheels will be available at the Public Information Tent located between 20th & 21st Streets. In LBT: * 68th Street has a ramp and a viewing platform.
What will happen if it rains? Barring steady downpours – we will be able to fly in some capacity. Some of the larger kites may be grounded if it rains, but we should be able to fly a few kites if there is mist and/or light rain. Kite flight is also wind dependent and may impact the event. Make sure to follow us on both our Instagram and Facebook pages, this is where we will put live and updated communications regarding changes due to the weather.
